Three focused course tracks.

The lesson library.

These eight focused lessons are supplementary study, not exhaustive coverage of every official knowledge, skill and ability. Each is public and links to official references. Read it, solve the worked example and use the checklist before moving on.

An adjustable starting plan

Build a study rhythm you can keep.

Use this eight-week sequence as a planning template, not a promise of readiness. Extend the weeks for unfamiliar topics and combine multiple study resources. Keep an error log and return to the rule behind each missed answer.

Week 1

Map the exam and establish a baseline

  • Read the current official handbook and confirm your eligibility path.
  • Take Form A without using answer explanations.
  • Create an error log grouped by the seven domains.

Week 2

Worker, earning and election foundations

  • Build a cash/tax/overtime/plan-treatment matrix for fictional codes.
  • Explain why a withholding election does not settle every tax.
  • Rework missed core-concept questions with new facts.

Week 3

Source-based compliance research

  • Record source authority, effective date and exam-law basis.
  • Separate deposit, return and correction tasks.
  • Build a fact checklist for a general multistate issue.

Week 4

Gross-to-net calculations

  • Show every intermediate amount in the worked examples.
  • Practice limit crossings and distinguish tax bases.
  • Reverse-check supplied gross-ups and cash net.

Week 5

Systems and data handoffs

  • Reconcile a synthetic export/import by count, total and employee.
  • Write expected results for effective-date boundaries.
  • Describe how to reconcile an unknown submission before retrying.

Week 6

Controls and a reliable payroll service

  • Write a practical exception update.
  • Trace one change from source approval to final result.
  • Identify a preventive and detective control at each handoff.

Week 7

Payroll accounting and cross-domain review

  • Build the simplified journal without the answer.
  • Reconcile a liability rollforward and accrual reversal.
  • Review the weakest domains from your error log.

Week 8

A fresh exam and targeted revision

  • Take previously unseen Form B before reading its explanations.
  • Compare domain gaps, not just the overall percentage.
  • Adjust further study and official resources to the remaining gaps.

Practice a full exam-length question set

Four 190-question practice exams.

Work through 760 original questions across four separate forms, with account-saved answers and explanations after submission. The P.A.Y. practice goal is at least 162 of 190 correct (85%). This is learning feedback, not the official CPP scaled score or a promise of exam success.

Each form uses approximately the official domain weights: 46 / 27 / 42 / 27 / 19 / 15 / 14 questions across the seven domains. These are our practice counts, not official question allocations. A used form stays locked for the current cycle; try the other unused forms. After all four are submitted, you can explicitly begin another cycle while keeping your results.

Free account for practice and downloads. All four free roles qualify. Newsletter and promotional email choices remain optional.

Every exam shows elapsed time. Timed exams also show time remaining. Save & next records each answer to your account; resume returns to the same shuffled questions. Timers continue while you are away.

Keep the official source close

Eligibility, exam dates and source material.

PayrollOrg lists a 190-question, four-hour CPP exam. The next North American window has registration November 9, 2026–April 16, 2027 and testing January 4–April 17, 2027. Verify your location and current rules with PayrollOrg before applying.

For exams administered September 5, 2026–September 3, 2027, PayrollOrg specifies federal rules in effect January 1, 2026. Keep that exam basis separate from later workplace updates. State-specific workplace exercises elsewhere on P.A.Y. are not presented as CPP exam questions.

The current Candidate Handbook is requested from PayrollOrg. We link to that page; we have not republished its form-gated contents. Official study products may require a separate purchase.

A few useful distinctions.

Does this award the CPP credential or count as an approved eligibility course?

No. This is independent P.A.Y. preparation. PayrollOrg determines eligibility and awards CPP through its own examination process. P.A.Y. is not affiliated with or endorsed by PayrollOrg; these courses do not replace its named qualifying education paths and no RCH approval is claimed.

Are these actual CPP examination questions?

No. Every question was written as an original P.A.Y. learning scenario. No recalled, copied or official exam questions are used. Practice percentages are learning feedback, not official scaled scores or a pass guarantee.

Where are my practice answers saved?

Saved answers, original question order and completed results are private to your P.A.Y. account. Select Save answer or Save & next before leaving. One exam can be active at a time. Failed forms cannot be repeated until all four are submitted and you explicitly start a new cycle. An unconfirmed save is held for an exact saved-status check; it is never automatically resent. The downloadable HTML guide remains a separate study worksheet.

How do the timer and elapsed time work?

Elapsed time begins when the server starts your exam and includes time away from the page. Untimed exams have no deadline. Optional timed exams have a four-hour server deadline that survives reloads; answers saved after the deadline are rejected. At expiry, only saved answers are graded. A result shows the actual elapsed time between its saved start and submission. If a timed exam is submitted late, it separately shows four hours of exam time and the actual elapsed time to submission. Changing your computer clock does not change the server deadline.

How should I use fictional rates in the examples?

Use the supplied assumptions for that exercise. They isolate the method being practiced and are not a production withholding calculation. Read the official source for the applicable exam year, exclusions, wage bases and rounding before using a real payroll rule.

Keep learning between paydays.
