02 / Resume workshop
Choose a starting structure, replace the brackets and remove anything you cannot verify. Tailor the language to the role without claiming tools, credentials or responsibilities you have not used.
Highlight the relevant tasks in the posting. Connect them to your experience, transferable skills or a clearly labeled practice project.
Use an action, actual scope, method and documented outcome. Include a number only when you can explain where it came from.
Use clear headings and simple formatting. Check the employer’s file instructions and proofreading before you submit.
Use this interactive tool with your free P.A.Y. profile. Newsletter and promotional email are optional.
Use real transferable work: accurate recordkeeping, confidential data handling, customer questions, reconciliations, scheduling or spreadsheet checks. Label learning projects as practice. Explain what you did yourself and what still needs supervised experience. A course does not substitute for employment history.
03 / Prepare for the conversation
Read these preparation steps below. Your free profile opens the checkboxes; selections clear when you leave.
Set the situation and your responsibility. Explain how you checked the source, narrowed the difference, documented the outcome and escalated what you could not resolve.
Start with the employee’s question, distinguish cash from taxable wages where relevant, show the specific math you can support and identify what payroll must verify. Avoid guessing or giving personal tax advice.
Describe the expected behavior, synthetic or approved test cases, actual result, exceptions and approval. Be clear about your own role and who authorized release.
“How is the pay run reviewed?” “Which teams own time and benefit inputs?” “What systems and interfaces would I use?” “What would success look like in the first 90 days?”
Create a fictional time import, a reconciliation with made-up totals or a one-page process map. Explain the assumptions and the checks. Never reuse employee records, screenshots or employer files without authorization.
04 / Modern payroll toolkit
Payroll roles vary. Use target job descriptions to decide which skills matter next; every role does not require every platform.
Process & controls
Learn inputs, cutoffs, preview review, authorization, payment confirmation and reconciliation.
Try: Map a fictional cycle and show who checks each handoff.
Data & analysis
Practice spreadsheets, validation, lookup methods, pivot tables and repeatable data cleanup. Power Query can connect and reshape data through reusable steps.
Try: Clean two synthetic CSV files and reconcile their totals.
Technology & HRIS
Learn effective dates, field mapping, imports, interfaces, exception handling and user acceptance testing. Explore the systems named in the jobs you want.
Try: Write expected results and test cases for a fictional rate change.
Research & change
Separate federal, state and local questions. Distinguish publication and effective dates. Record the official source and the open question.
Try: Summarize one official update and the question a payroll team should review.
Communication & service
Practice employee explanations, concise exception notes and clear handoffs to HR, benefits and finance.
Try: Explain a fictional taxable benefit without jargon.
Leadership & trust
Learn ownership, capacity planning, access controls, vendor oversight, incident communication and coaching.
Try: Write a coverage plan for a fictional deadline and reviewer absence.

05 / Turn direction into learning
The existing Payroll Practice Academy has five learning levels. Its catalog shows course status, current license choices and your account’s progression requirements. A level license includes its available challenge route; the existing assessment prerequisites and mastery standards still apply. Paid Academy ordering is not open yet. A free member profile does not unlock courses. Preview the license details now; the level links below open course access for licensed learners.

06 / Keep learning from the source
Career guidance sources reviewed October 31, 2026. Original publication and effective dates remain with each source. CareerOneStop links use its readable official alternate host. This page is an educational starting point, not a hiring assessment.
